One day I was lying on the floor of my sister's van, heading from a skilled care unit at a rehab center to the hospital, for another of what would become several surgical procedures.
So many things were going on in my life, health-wise, adding up to one shock after another.
I'd had an emergency surgery a few weeks prior. Learned I had cancer. Spent Christmas and New Year's in a hospital and rehab center. I was weak, feeling so sick, and in less than two hours, would be back in the operating room.
Of course, I was in prayer mode, having to trust the Lord to help me quell the fear and maintain a positive mindset. Come what may, I was His child, in His hands and nothing could happen that He didn't allow.
While riding on the floor of the van (since I wasn't able to sit up for long) I was reading my bible.
Unsure of what scripture to choose, I simply let it open and the pages separated to what I hoped the Lord wanted me to see--Psalm 91.
There I began to read about the faithfulness of God and how He places His angels to watch over us.
There I began to read about the faithfulness of God and how He places His angels to watch over us.
One of my own God-winks
Arriving at the hospital, St. Vincent's in Evansville, Indiana, I headed inside to check in and find us a place to sit, while my sister parked the van.
After check-in, I found us some seats about the time she came through the doors.
As she settled in next to me, I surveyed the room, finally gazing up toward the high ceiling.
There, in beautifully ornate print was the same scripture my bible had opened to on my way there. Even now, tears fill my eyes remembering the immediate feeling of being bathed in love and reassurance.
I took a pic of the wall, having no idea I'd end up using it two years later to introduce you to my friend, who is also one of my fav authors, who's also experienced God-winks.
A faith-based fav...
If you've ever met Kimi, you'll know why Sunny Day was a perfect choice. She radiates SonShine wherever she goes.
In fact, it was Kimi who introduced me to the term, God-wink, explaining they're divinely-designed instances, that may be small yet have the ability to make a lasting impact on our lives.
This isn’t a big story, but like a God-wink, much good can (and will) come from it. Sometimes the blessing is exactly the thing needed to brighten someone's day, a God wink created just for them!
Enjoy!

A God-Wink, by Kimberly Kruise Thompson
After a few minutes of what I considered small talk and common manners exchanged, I hurried back to Mom and Dad’s van to sit down. A sleepless night and my aching knees were protesting loudly.
Who was I kidding?
Truly, I just wanted to hurry up the process and go back home. Perhaps I could pick up from where I left off when my nap was suddenly interrupted.
Earlier that morning, my husband and I had taken Mom and Dad’s van to get detailed. A lovely couple greeted us with happy smiles. These were the owners of a small mom-and-pop detail shop. We stood and talked for a few minutes.
I was in my early bird mode, in which I can talk the paint off a new car! I chirped like a bird, and my engine was running great!
But now, it was late afternoon and any gas I had earlier this morning was depleted. This chirpy bird had migrated to silent mode.
I’d only sat for a few minutes when the lady opened the passenger side of the door to let my mom get in.
She looked at me and said, “I just told your husband what a lovely person you are and how I appreciated meeting you this morning. You treated me so kindly, as a human being!”
I was taken aback. All I had done was talk to her a little, smiled, and treated her like I would any other person.
I looked at her and could not help but smile again.
“Thank you...” I said. “You’re a sweet lady and there’s no reason to treat you otherwise.”
Suddenly my tiredness left. My body and my knees weren’t hurting. She had my full attention!
Perhaps, the focus was not on me.
With tears in her eyes, she explained.
“It is not always this way...” and she continued to tell me a little story.
“Last night my little grandson called me. He said the Holy Spirit told him to tell me how very much God loved me!”
“I was so surprised, I later checked with my daughter to confirm my grandson’s words. My daughter confirmed, relaying the same message I’d heard from my grandson.”
I leaned over my mom and gave this precious lady a big hug. I could barely find the words except to reassure her of God’s love for all His children, and that we are indeed all the same. Not one is less than another.
We said our goodbyes, then she hugged my mom and me, kissing us on the cheeks.
I felt such warmth bloom in my soul. Here she was, a stranger, but didn’t feel like one. Instead, she was familiar.
I know the Spirit inside her and It communed with me ever so sweetly, for the same Spirit lives in both of us. I know the Holy Spirit she spoke of, and understood, the message was for me too.
Having felt inferior many times in my life, I could understand her feelings.
Not good enough.
Not spiritual enough.
Not worthy.
Not smart enough.
Useless.
Many times I’ve prayed, asking the good Lord to help ensure I never make someone feel any of those ways.
Here was God’s perfect timing, presenting itself allowing us both to witness a God wink. A sweet reassurance from God Himself that He loves this beautiful lady, and, yes even me, in all my weaknesses and self-doubt.
I came to the conclusion that no matter what we do, where we go, or who we meet, we have a chance to let Jesus’ love shine through us.
If we do it enough, perhaps it will be as natural as breathing itself.
In a most unsuspecting moment in time, may we all be so privileged to share a God wink.
So... have you had a God wink, or maybe witnessed one created for someone in need? I'd LOVEEEE to hear all about it and encourage you to share it in the comments!
Sometimes what's meant for us, isn't only for us, but meant to be shared to encourage and inspire others that there really is a God who created us, loves us and is consistently paying attention to every aspect of our lives.
⁶ “Aren’t five sparrows sold for two Assaria coins? Not one of them is forgotten by God.
⁷ But the very hairs of your head are all counted.
Therefore don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.”
Luke 12: 6-7
